The Daily Mail: Probiotics ease misery of IBS
Taking a daily capsule of ’friendly bacteria’ has been found to significantly improve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
IBS is a disorder of the digestive system which affects up to eight million Britons. The cause is not fully understood, but it may be due to overactivity in parts of the gut.
Typical symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Current treatments target specific symptoms, often with limited success.
Now, a study from Sheffield University has found that after two weeks of taking the probiotic supplement ProVen, sufferers reported an improvement in general symptoms and abdominal pain; after four weeks their bowel habits had also improved.
